8-character passwords can now be brute-forced by computers that can try all 6 quadrillion permutations in 2 and a half hours, but really, any good password system should lock the user out after the first quadrillion guesses. By the second quadrillion, it's probably safe to assume that it's not a legitimate login attempt.
Please *contact me*. All I need is the domain name, which EU Member State it's located in, and the rough topic of the instance. Approximate user count welcome, but not necessary.
Please help. This is important.
Time to update: there's a new version of Tor Browser available.

In french, when two persons greet each other, they usually say "ça va ?", which roughtly means "are you ok ?".
I hate this.
It's binary. Either you're perfectly OK in all your life, either you're not.
And if you dare to say you're not ok… Usually the talk ends abruptly, because the other person was not asking you if you were ok (yeah kind of paradoxal, ain't it ?) but was just saying hello.
When I ask someone if they are ok, I *mean* it.
"ça va" is shit. "comment te sens-tu" is way better. ("are you ok" vs "how do you feel").
Because I try to convey the fact that I *do* care and I *want* to know. To interact.
Please take care of each other.
mastodon meta (fairly important)
gargron is now on record as saying that the mastodon api is only for mastodon
what this basically means is that the mastodon ecosystem of apps, helpful tools, etc will only ever be reliably compatible with mastodon with the rest of us jumping through hoops to try to reverse engineer it
so, in summary, a community that is allegedly federated actually does have an avenue through which one platform can control it. just fact.
makes u think?
“Just install Linux on it” is the “just change the engine of your car” of tech.
Not everyone is a mechanic, not everyone wants to be a mechanic, and, if we want a world where freedom is the norm, we must stop expecting everyone to become a mechanic.
Note: this is not because these people are too dumb to be mechanics. It’s because they’re brain surgeons and space-shuttle pilots and they have three kids and they care for a loved one and they don’t have time to also be a mechanic.
I’ll be live on Al Jazeera News Grid ~ 15:35-15:55 today to discuss Facebook’s consolidation of Messenger, WhatsApp, and Instagram.
Expect my best what-the-fuck-were-you-expecting face and some slowly boiling frogs analogies 🍵🐸

Anybody on Mastodon.social, you should consider no longer being on mastodon.social.
In the not too distant future this account may not be able to interact with them due to ass-hattery on the part of the admin.
Also, this is a distributed network, one node that is something like 90% of the network goes against that. Don't support Gargrons refusal to accept accessibility as a good idea and being all cagey about funding sources.
Friendica 2019.01 released – #friendica
Congrats to the whole Friendica team for a huge release! Why? It brings Friendica over to the #ActivityPub world, bringing compatibility with tens of additional projects not reachable via #OStatus, #Diaspora or #DFRN protocols. 🎉
Whenever a web browser, operating system, or web site gains dominance among users, it stops being cool and starts becomes blatantly abusive.
This Chromium nonsense is just more of what we saw from Internet Explorer.
Every generation of geeks learns this anew, and acts all shocked. Learn some history, folks. Learn from those who came before.
Stop supporting only one platform. Variety is ESSENTIAL. Monocultures are death. #sysadmin
